Scrapbook of clippings relating to the Henry Soltau trial, / compiled by Franklin Fowler Ellsworth, 1940-1941.

A scrapbook of newspaper clippings (Dec. 1940-May 1941) detailing the criminal trial of Henry J. Soltau, temperance crusader and secretary of the Hennepin County Law Enforcement League, a temperance group. The volume was compiled by Franklin F. Ellsworth, Soltau's attorney. The charges against Soltau were perjury, suborning perjury, and operating as a detective without a license. The incident precipitating the trial occurred when two of Soltau's investigators bought liquor from a tavern keeper accused of selling liquor without a license. Soltau later claimed that he had bought the liquor. Soltau was found guilty in January, 1941. There were two appeals, both overruled, and Soltau was sentenced to a one-year term in the Minnesota state prison.
